Distribution: In our region, the American Alligator occurs only in Texas where it ranges across southeastern and southcentral parts of the state. There is also an isolated population in the Brownsville, Texas area.
Legal Status: In 1967 the American Alligator was given Federal protection as an Endangered Species. The species has since made an strong recovery, but the USFWS continues to list it as a Threatened Species due to similarity
of appearance with another protected species. An annual harvest of the American Alligator is now permitted but it is conducted under the strict supervision of the USFWS.
