We have just updated the taxonomy to reflect currently recognized names in our Snake Species Listings.
For the most part, the scientific and common names used in this section now generally follow The Scientific and Standard English Names of Amphibians and Reptiles of North America North of Mexico with Comments Regarding Confidence in Our Understanding, 6th edition, 2008, Crother, B. I. (ed.) SSAR Herpetological Circular No 37. However, SWCHR may on occasion deviate from that "standard" herpetological list to reflect SWCHR's preferences in favor of stability and conservative taxonomic practice.
Feel free to check out the Snakes of the American Southwest.
If you have photographs of any of the snake species that do not yet have photographs displayed, PLEASE consider submitting them for consideration. For more information concerning the submission of photographs, please see A Call for Papers and Photos.
Over the coming weeks we will be updating our Lizard Species Listings to reflect the most current taxonomy.
